The Annapurna Base Camp Trek (ABC Trek) is one of Nepal’s most iconic journeys, taking trekkers deep into the heart of the Annapurna Massif. At 4,130 meters (13,550 feet), the Annapurna Base Camp offers a jaw-dropping amphitheater of snow-capped peaks including Annapurna I (8,091 m), Machapuchare (6,993 m), Annapurna South (7,219 m), Hiunchuli (6,441 m), and more.
Known for its diverse landscapes, vibrant Gurung villages, terraced farmlands, and rhododendron forests, the ABC trek provides a perfect balance of cultural immersion and Himalayan adventure. Unlike the high-altitude treks of the Everest region, this trail allows trekkers to witness both lush greenery and alpine wilderness in a single journey.
Why choose the Annapurna Base Camp trek?
Spectacular Mountain Views: Panoramic vistas of Annapurna I, Machapuchare, Hiunchuli, and Annapurna South.
Scenic Trails: Pass through dense rhododendron forests, bamboo groves, and terraced paddy fields.
Cultural Experience: Explore Gurung and Magar villages with their warm hospitality and traditions.
Hot Springs at Jhinu Danda: Natural hot water pools provide a soothing break for tired muscles.
Annapurna Sanctuary: Walk into a natural amphitheater surrounded by some of the tallest peaks in the world.
Accessible and Rewarding: A moderately difficult trek that is achievable for most trekkers with good fitness.
Arrive at Pokhara, the charming lakeside city surrounded by green hills and overlooked by the Annapurna range. Spend the evening walking along Phewa Lake, where the reflection of Machapuchare (Fishtail Peak) shimmers on the water. Explore lively cafés, local bazaars, and prepare your trekking gear. Dinner and overnight stay in our guest house.
Start your journey with an early morning drive (1.5 hrs) to Nayapul, the trek starting point. The trail follows the Modi Khola River, crossing small suspension bridges and passing terraced rice fields. As you climb higher, stone steps lead to Ghandruk, a traditional Gurung village known for its slate-roofed houses and cultural museums. Enjoy panoramic views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machapuchare. Later engage in evening cultural interactions with the local Gurung community.
The trail climbs gently through rhododendron forests alive with bird songs. Descend to the Kimrong Khola valley, then climb steadily to reach Chhomrong, a bustling village perched on the hillside. Chhomrong is the last permanent settlement on the way to the Annapurna Sanctuary, often called the “Gateway to Annapurna.” Sunset view over Annapurna South is simply breathtaking. Overnight in a teahouse with Himalayan views.
Descend steep stone steps to Chhomrong Khola and cross a suspension bridge. The trail climbs uphill through thick forests of bamboo and oak, rich in wildlife and known for the occasional sight of langurs. Pass by the small settlement of Sinuwa, where you can enjoy tea with mountain views. Continue through cool, shaded bamboo groves before reaching Bamboo village—a quiet resting point surrounded by greenery.
The trail today is a mix of forest paths and rocky climbs. Pass through Dovan, a small hamlet offering resting spot. Waterfalls cascade down cliffs along the route, creating a soothing background sound. As you approach Deurali, the landscape begins to change into high alpine terrain, with fewer trees and more rugged cliffs. From Deurali, you can see the valley opening up towards Machapuchare Base Camp.
Today is the most rewarding day of the trek. The trail first takes you to Machapuchare Base Camp (MBC, 3,700 m), where the sacred Fishtail Peak dominates the skyline. Stop for tea and enjoy mesmerizing views of Gangapurna, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. From MBC, continue a gradual ascent through alpine meadows and moraines to reach Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m). On arrival, you’ll find yourself in the Annapurna Sanctuary, a natural amphitheater encircled by towering peaks like Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Machapuchare, and Hiunchuli. Evening sunset paints the mountains golden. Overnight at ABC teahouse.
Wake up early to witness a spectacular sunrise over Annapurna I—the first light touching the peaks is an unforgettable sight. After breakfast, begin the descent back through MBC, Deurali, and Dovan. The downhill trek is easier but requires steady footing on stone steps. Reach Sinuwa village, where you’ll rest for the night amidst serene forests.
Retrace the trail back to Chhomrong. From Chhomrong, descend steeply towards Jhinu Danda, famous for its natural hot springs near the Modi Khola River. Soak your tired muscles in the warm pools while listening to the river’s flow—a perfect Himalayan spa experience. Later, drive back to Pokhara and enjoy a relaxing evening by the lake, and celebrate your successful journey with local Nepali cuisine.
