Tucked away in the folds of the Eastern Himalayas, the Dhotrey–Tolung–Tumling Trek is a scenic and offbeat trail that connects remote Himalayan hamlets through the pristine wilderness of the Singtalila National Park. Whether you’re short on time or just craving peace, this trail offers stunning views, rich biodiversity, and authentic local experiences—all packed into a weekend getaway.
It is a short yet breathtaking trail nestled in the Eastern Himalayas of West Bengal, which takes you from the peaceful village of Dhotrey to the hidden village of Tolung (often confused with Tumling), and then onward to the picturesque Nepal-side hamlet of Tumling. Often overshadowed by its more popular cousin, the Sandakphu Trek, this serene route is perfect for beginners, nature lovers, and anyone looking for a weekend Himalayan escape.
Starting from the quiet hamlet of Dhotrey (8,500 ft) and ending in Tumling (9,600 ft), the trail offers panoramic views of the Kangchenjunga range, traverses through Singtalila National Park, and passes through dense forests of rhododendron, pine, and bamboo. It’s also a prime location to spot red pandas, Himalayan monals, and barking deer.
Whether you’re an experienced trekker looking for a quick nature fix or a beginner dipping your toes into the world of trekking, the Dhotrey-Tumling trail has something to offer.

After a warm breakfast, begin your trek from Dhotrey to Tumling. The trail meanders through the Singtalila National Park, known for its rich biodiversity and enchanting forest paths.
Depending on the season, you’ll walk under blooming rhododendron canopies (April–May) or crunching golden leaves (October–November). Keep an eye out for red pandas, Himalayan black bears, and rare birds like the Satyr Tragopan.
About 3 hours into the trek, the forest opens up to reveal Tumling — a quaint Himalayan village with incredible views of Mount Kangchenjunga and, on clear days, Mount Everest far in the distance.
Spend the evening at a cozy Nepali-style homestay. Don’t miss the sunset — the sky turns a surreal orange-pink over the Sleeping Buddha (a name for the Kanchenjunga massif).
