The Gangotri to Vasuki Tal Trek is one of the most spiritually significant and scenically rewarding treks in the Indian Himalayas. Beginning from Gangotri, the sacred source of the Ganga River, and ascending to the pristine Vasuki Tal at an altitude of 4,978 meters, this trek is a sublime blend of mythology, rugged beauty, and alpine challenge.
Traversing through the Gangotri National Park, the trail follows the Bhagirathi River, climbs up to the legendary Gomukh Glacier (the snout of the Ganga), then to the Tapovan meadows, and finally culminates at the sacred Vasuki Tal. Surrounded by giants like Shivling Peak, Bhagirathi Sisters, and Meru, this trek is perfect for those who seek both inner peace and high-altitude adventure.

️ Best Time to Do Gangotri to Vasuki Tal Trek:
Avoid monsoon months (July–August) due to landslides and trail closures.

Drive Distance – 265 km ; 10 to 11 Hours
Altitude – Chirbasa – 3580 m
Distance – 09 km ; 5 to 6 Hours
After breakfast, head to Chirbasa. The trail is easy as it passes through lush forest, river streams, and valleys with majestic mountain views. Relish the sight of snow-clad peaks and continue hiking till Chirbasa. Nestled by the river Bhagirathi, Chirbasa offers grand views of Bhagirathi peaks and sight of Gomukh glacier.
Altitude – Bhojbasa – 3780 m
Distance – 05 km – 3 to 4 Hours
Wake up early to witness a mesmerising sunrise view of the magestic Bhagirathi peaks. Today, the trail is easy and offers magnificent sight of Mt Shivling and Bhagirathi peaks. Bhojbasa sits perfectly on a plain terrain beside Bhagirathi River from where Mt Shivling and other snow-capped mountains are clearly visible.
Altitude –Tapovan – 4,463 m
Trek Distance – 09 km ; 3 to 4 Hours
As you begin the trek to Tapovan, cross the Gomukh Glacier, the origin of Ganga, then ascend steeply to Tapovan. The trail from Bhojbasa to Gomukh is an easy one but it gets steeper from Gomukh to Tapovan. It is is a beautiful alpine meadow with up-close views of Mount Shivling.
Altitude – Nandanvan – 4810 m
Distance – 06 km – 3 to 4 Hours
Start the day early and get ready to traverse the Gangotri glacier. After a short climb to the ridge ahead, and crossing the Akash Ganga stream and Gangotri , continue further to reach Nandanvan.
Descend and , the ascent is through a landslide prone area.
Nandanvan is a beautiful lavish meadow located on the base of Bhagirathi with the magnificent views of Mt. Shivling, Mt. Kedardome and Mt. Meru. The campsite is windy and offers great sight of snow covered peaks. Setup your camps here and settle for the day.
Altitude – Vasuki Tal – 4978 m
Distance – Total 12 km ; 7 to 8 Hours
After an early breakfast, begin the trek from Nandanvan to the sacred and pristine lake, Vasuki Taal. The route navigates towards the base camp of Mt. Satopanth and Mt. Vasuki. Today, you will be trekking along Chaturangi Glacier and pass through rocky terrain.
Vasuki Tal lies amidst snow-covered mountains, and it remains frozen in winters. Witness the rare bloom of Brahmakamal and various other floral jewels around the lake.
After spending some time, bid adieu to Vasuki Tal and start descending back to Nandanvan for another night stay.
Altitude – Bhojbasa – 3775 m
Distance –14 km ; 5 to 6 Hours
Post breakfast, get down to Bhojbasa via Gomukh. Witness the picturesque lofty peaks and admirable surroundings in the morning and bid adieu to them.
Retrace your steps, halt at Gomukh and reach Bhojbasa.
Altitude – Gangotri – 3415 m
Distance – 14 km ; 6 to 7 Hours
Wake up early and retrace your way to Gangotri from Bhojbasa. Relish the last glimpses of Mt Shivling and descend through the steep terrain. When you reach Gangotri hotel visit Gangotri temple and witness Ganga Aarti there.
The arrangements will be made in a hotel at Gangotri.
Journey ends with a heart full of peace and a camera full of Himalayas.
A buffer day in trekking is crucial for ensuring flexibility and safety during an expedition. It acts as a contingency for unforeseen delays due to bad weather, health issues, or challenging trail conditions. Including a buffer day helps trekkers avoid rushing, reduces stress, and increases the chances of completing the trek successfully. It also allows time for acclimatization in high-altitude regions, minimizing the risk of altitude sickness. Overall, a buffer day adds resilience to the trekking plan, making the experience safer and more enjoyable.

Yes. This trek is not recommended for beginners. Prior experience with high-altitude treks (above 14,000 ft) and good physical fitness are essential.
Absolutely. Acclimatization is critical to avoid altitude sickness, especially since the trek crosses the high-altitude pass.
Yes, if you're trekking with an organized group or agency, nutritious meals (veg) are usually provided. At Mountbuzz, we provide 4 times vegetarian meals with Daal and Vegetable dishes that changes it's type everyday, along with Soups, and sweet dishes everyday.
It’s not advisable to trek solo due to the remoteness, river crossings, glacier sections, and lack of mobile connectivity. Trekking with a group or guide is safer.
Yes, permits from the Forest Department and possibly Inner Line Permits are required. Trekking with a registered agency can simplify this process.
