Experience the breathtaking beauty of the majestic Himalayas as you embark on a thrilling journey. As per the old tales, the Pandavas of the Mahabharata climbed to the top of a mountain to visit Lord Shiva and inquire about the path to heaven. Located in the state of Uttarakhand in India, the mountain is referred to as Kedarkantha. Perched at an height of 12, 500 ft, the summit of the peak offers a panoramic view of the surrounding valley and towering mountain ranges. In the winter months, the trek becomes even more alluring because of a thick layer of snow on the trail. Beginners and individuals of all ages can easily access the peak because it doesn’t require any climbing expertise to scale it. The snowy trail starts from the quaint village of Sankri and goes through thick forests and meadows, until it reaches a serene lake called Juda Ka Talab where the team halts for the night amidst tall trees and snow. As you go further uphill and get closer to the summit, the world opens up around you. The towering peaks of the upper Himalayas accompany you until you reach the pinnacle of the mountain range. The journey seems well worth the effort once you watch the first light of the day touch the majestic mountain ranges from the top. The golden hour under the kaleidoscopic sky is bound to mesmerize you.
There will be a routine medical checkup for all the trekkers every night before going to bed. Dehradun to Sankri via Mussoorie
A spectacular drive from Dehradun to Sankri kicks off the first day. You are expected to join the team at Dehradun railway station by 6:30 am. Sankri is around 200 km away from Dehradun, and it takes about 7-8 hours to reach it. The road passes through Mussoorie, the "Queen of the Hills," and goes along the rivers Yamuna and Tonnes, crossing Kempty waterfall, pine forests, deep gorges, and finally entering the Govind National Park.
The drive ends at Sankri, a picturesque and charming Himalayan village that serves as the starting point for numerous Himalayan treks. Beautiful views of Mount Swargrohini can be enjoyed from the village itself. You might anticipate snow right from Sankri itself if you are trekking during the winter. You will have enough time to tour the neighbourhood market once you have had a chance to freshen up at the house of Mountbuzz. If you need last-minute shopping for your upcoming adventure, the bazaar in Sankri has a variety of gear, clothing, and supplies for trekking.
Sankri to Juda Ka Taal
After an early breakfast, we start the trek from Sankri to Juda Ka Taalab through maple and pine forests. It takes approximately 4-5 hours to cover a distance of around 4 km with a steady ascent. As we trek uphill, we will cross small villages, suspension bridges, water streams, and halt points on our way. The area is home to rich Himalayan wildlife, and you may catch sight of Himalayan langoors, wild boars and rabbits, martens, Himalayan bears, etc. During winter, the path is covered with snow, and Juda ka Taalab gets a thin layer of ice on it. Beautifully hidden by the wilderness at an altitude of 9,100 ft, this lake is just picture-perfect. We camp at this location with the lake on one side and pine forest on the other. After enjoying a delicious meal by the lake, we rest for the night in the tents.
Juda Ka Taal to Kedarkantha base camp
After waking up to a beautiful sunrise amidst snow-capped mountains, we begin the day with a warmup, stretching, and yoga session, followed by a decent breakfast. On this day, we pass through pine and oak forests and cross vast meadows. As we go further up, the magnificent sight of the Swargarohini massif and Bandarpoonch opens up. Along the route, in the valleys and crannies of the mountains, you can catch a glimpse of people living a sustainable life that is in harmony with the environment. The route is well maintained by the forest department, making it suitable for beginners. Upon your arrival at the campsite, tea and refreshments will be served while you enjoy the vibe of the location. After dinner, you may want to go stargazing when the sky gets filled with sparkling stars.
